. >> we'll be back next week. see you then. steves: from granada, it's a two-hour drive over the mountains and down into europe's fun-in-the-sun headquarters, the costa del sol. i find this strip of mediterranean coastline generally overbuilt and very commercialized. malaga, the major city of the coast, is a good place to pass through. and almost anything even resembling a quaint fishing village is long gone, replaced by time-share condos and golf courses. the big draw is the beaches. there are plenty of hotels, and sun worshipers enjoy themselves in spite of the congestion and lack of charm or local culture. nearly every country from europe's drizzly north tucks an expatriate community somewhere along this coast. they don't want to leave their culture, just their weather. my favorite costa del sol stop is the resort town of nerja. while capitalizing on the holiday culture, nerja has retained some of its charm. the church fronts the square, which fronts the beach, and everybody's out strolling, eventually winding up on the proud "balcony of europe" terrace. this bluff, jutting jauntily int

or san francisco. we have been -- i have been working sfmta over ten years. steve bell, your real estate contract manager, we looked at stuff in south city, 245 south spruce, which the airport had a long-term lease for the expansion that didn't occur. we had to relocation from the city. dbi beverages, golden brands to some who know, to 175,000 people we couldn't find anything in san francisco that. is one of the constrictive things. the accusation by sales force is skewed. everybody looks at that and tries to comp the amount of money per square foot they paid is off the charts. i don't think it is reproducable. in daly city one of the reasons we were able to do this is that the huge development in visitacion valley, which was a redevelopment project, which is now off the table for now, i think one of the reasons we were able to acquire the leasehold there and not have any flak from daly city, planning department and supervisors in daly city is that is a dead piece of land, 20 acres that would take 10, 20 years to develop. fit was in development i think it would have been much more diffi

ago today, steve jobs, the visionary cofounder of apple, died at the age of 56 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. the company remains an industry powerhouse despite the loss of their leader. >>> now on to our top story tonight. good news on the jobs front. according to the household survey, 700, i'm sorry, 873,000 people found a job last night. last month. that brought the unemployment rate down to 7.8% for the first time in 3 1/2 years. the employers survey though reported a very different number, only 114,000 people found a job. that means, 759,000 people found a job but they aren't showing up on the payroll. how is that possible? with me to sort it all out, phil angelides, former california treasurer and campaign surrogate for president obama. thank you so much for coming on the show tonight. >> a pleasure. melissa: a lot of people have spent the day trying to reconcile these two numbers. of course these surveys are done very differently. the household people call people at home, say are you looking, are you working? employer survey they grow to the employers look at pe

. and now evidently steve forbes, a former presidential candidate tweeting his endorsement of jack welch. then against almost everybody else in this town, a former economist on here, jared bernstein, said jack welch ought to be ashamed of himself. a former republican white house official also endorsed the integrity of the people who put these numbers together at the bureau of labor statistics. so jack welch and a couple of other people on an island on this one. really an inflammatory attack with no evidence to back it up. >> mike viqueira at the white house, thanks so much. >>> for reaction to that i'm joined by susan page, "usa today" and david nakamura, "washington post." good day to both of you. this is fascinating. susan, first of all, how much does this employment number blunt mitt romney's debate momentum? and do you think the white house is going phew, relieved at this? >> if not popping champagne bottles. two-ways in which this number was so useful to the white house yesterday. it got the unemployment rate below 8% which has been kind of a line of demarkation. the romney folks ha
